Last week, after Delta & Kai received their scores, Johannes mentioned that Motsi’s ‘nine’ was the first one to be awarded this series. With no other ‘nines’ throughout the rest of the show, I thought I would see how the overall scoring of series 24 compared with previous years.

On cloud ‘nine’

Firstly, I looked at how many individual scores of ‘nine’ or ‘ten’ had been awarded at the end of week three in each series?

Series Scores of ‘9’ or ‘10’ awarded in weeks 1-3
s19 22
s12 18
s20 15
s11, s14 13
s3, s15, s17 11
s5, s18, s21, s22 9
s16, s23 8
s4 7
s6, s8, s9 6
s7, s13 4
s2 3
s1 2
s24 1
s10 0

As you can see, the current series has only bettered series 10, which saw it’s first ‘nines’ awarded in week four to the eventual champion Louis Smith.

So, series 24, has clearly been found lacking on the number of high scoring paddles, but how does it compare when looking at the average score awarded? Again, this year’s contestants should probably look away…

Rank Series Average score awarded in weeks 1-3 Difference compared to the average of all 24 series
1st s14 27.9 +2.9
2nd s18* 26.9 +1.9
3rd s20 26.4 +1.5
4th s19 26.3 +1.4
5th s5 26.1 +1.2
…
20th s2 23.7 -1.2
21st s15 23.6 -1.4
22nd s17 23.5 -1.5
23rd s10 23.4 -1.5
24th s24 23.3 -1.7

*Scores awarded by the three person-panel in s18 have been adjusted to a 40-point scale to enable a fair comparison.

Unfortunately, series 24 is ranked as the lowest scoring Strictly series of all time and is close to ‘two points per routine’ less than what we’ve seen in an ‘average’ series.

Who are we to judge?

Digging a little deeper, is it one specific judge who has caused this decline in scoring, or are all the judges equally culpable?

Let’s focus on the scores from the last six series, which is when Anton joined the panel as a full-time judge.

Series Average score awarded in weeks 1-3 Craig Motsi Shirley Anton
s19 26.3 6.0 6.7 6.8 6.9
s20 26.4 5.7 7.0 6.7 7.0
s21 25.7 5.9 6.7 6.4 6.8
s22 25.3 5.7 6.6 6.3 6.7
s23 24.0 5.4 6.2 6.0 6.3
s24 23.3 5.3 5.9 5.7 6.4
  • It’s interesting to note that despite the average score decreasing compared to series 23, Anton’s scoring has increased marginally this year
  • Anton can now hold sole claim to being Strictly’s most ‘generous’ judge, scoring on average half a point higher than Motsi, when in previous year’s they were virtually ‘neck-and-neck’
  • Compared to series 20 (which included Hamza Yassin, Helen Skelton & Fleur East), the average scores of both Motsi & Shirley are a full point lower this year

It ‘themes’ too good to be true

Next, I wanted to check whether the decrease in scoring had affected every week of the competition.

Series Week 1 average score Week 2 average score Change vs previous week Week 3 average score Change vs previous week
s19 23.9 26.4 +2.6 28.9* +2.5
s20 25.1 26.5 +1.4 27.7* +1.2
s21 24.3 24.9 +0.6 28.2* +3.3
s22 22.6 25.1 +2.5 28.7* +3.6
s23 21.3 23.0 +1.7 28.1* +5.1
s24 21.4 23.9* +2.5 24.6 +0.7

* Movie Week

These scores show that the scoring boost that a ‘theme week’ usually generates ended up being less pronounced than normal this year. I would argue that this was an unforeseen consequence of rescheduling ‘Movie Week’ to week two.

Mind the gap

I then checked how the ‘top performers’ of series 24 (Delta & Kai, Lacey & Vito, Tabby & Mark) compared to the highest scoring contestants from previous years.

As you will see, the ‘class of 2026’ have some catching up to do, with Delta the only contestant inside the top 50, and Lacey and Tabby both currently outside of the top 100.

Rank Points scored in first three routines Partnership Series
=1st 102 points Cherie Lunghi & James s6
=1st 102 points Kelly Brook & Brendan s5
=3rd 101 points Jason Donovan & Kristina s9
=3rd 101 points Natalie Gumede & Artem s11
=5th 100 points AJ Odudu & Kai s19
=5th 100 points Alesha Dixon & Matthew s5
=5th 100 points John Whaite & Johannes s19
=5th 100 points Ricky Whittle & Natalie s7

Before this series started, much was made in the press of the previous dance experience that this year’s cast had. Perhaps one reason the judges have been sparing with their use of their ‘eight’ paddles to the likes of Cach, Dani & Lawrence is down to pre-conceived expectations of how well they could already dance?

One final point I wanted to highlight is that the 11-point gap, after three routines, between our current points leader (Delta) and second place (Lacey & Tabby) is the second largest in Strictly history.

Point gap between 1st & 2nd place after three routines 1st place 2nd place Series
13 points Jason Donovan & Kristina (101 points) Harry Judd & Aliona, and
Holly Valance & Artem (88 points)
s9
11 points Delta Goodrem & Kai (92 points) Lacey Turner & Vito, and Tabby Stoecker & Mark (81 points) s24
8 points Ricky Whittle & Natalie (100 points) Ali Bastian & Brian, and Zoe Lucker & James s7
6 points Jill Halfpenny & Darren (94 points) Denise Lewis & Ian, and Aled Jones & Lilia (88 points) s2
6 points Natalie Gumede & Artem (101 points) Sophie Ellis-Bextor & Brendan (95 points) s11
6 points Molly Rainford & Carlos (99 points) Will Mellor & Nancy (93 points) s20

So, to answer my opening question of, ‘where have all the points gone?’

  • Shirley and Motsi have become progressively tougher with their scoring
  • Bringing ‘Movie week’ forward to week two largely nullified the themed week ‘scoring inflation’ we usually see
  • A greater level of perceived ‘dance experience’ with our celebrity cast may have altered the expectations of the judging panel

Of course, the low scoring start to series 24, won’t be helped by the sad absence of Kai and Delta in ‘Icons week’. It will be fascinating to see which partnerships use this unforeseen opportunity to step up and fill the void.
